Description

中国东北晚更新世动物群马类组合
(Combination of Horse in Late Pliesistocene Mammalian Fauna from Northeast China)

Customarily defined as separated species, the horses Equus lenensis, Equus orientalis are probably subspecies or just synonyms of Equus caballus. Though they are treated as separated species here, just a habit describe, but this is not to fully support them as independent species.

Equus binagadensis is a kind of ass distributed in Azerbaijian and Iran of Middle~Late Pleistocene( Iran,Holocene?). On a fragmentary cranium of an ass unearthed in Late Pleistocene deposit of Jilin Province, NE China, we find some interesting features. It shares a short muzzle and similar cranial and dental measurements with Equus binagadensis, and is remarkably smaller than the contemporary sympatric fossil Equus hemionus.

Mongolian wild horse, Mongolia wild ass is represented in the modern, here is no say more than is needed.

The earlist description of wild horse is done by Palls under the name “Equus ferus” from Mongolian specimens in Zoographic Rosso-Asiatica Vol. 1 (1811). However, the name Equus ferus is not adopted then. According to the International Zoological Nomenclature, a name not adopted for the first 50 years after the publication is a nomen oblitum which means a forgotten name. The name Equus przewalskii is published 70 years later than the name Equus ferus, but it should be the valid name for the wild horse due to its continuous usage.

Is Equus lenensis considered part of modern horses or separate? From what I know from the literature, they are considered separate species from modern horses.
